Bali & Lombok

Bali is dominated by towering volcanoes with lush, verdant hillsides. Parts of the island are also dry semi-desert, as in the north and southeast. Like Java, the soil is very fertile, supporting terraced rice fields where there is enough water. In the highlands cool-weather crops such as strawberries can grow. Sometimes it is hard to reconcile the growth associated with tourism and affluence (traffic, construction, noise and pollution) with the ideal of such an archetypical tropical island paradise.

After crossing the channel that separates Java from Bali, we decided to travel along the north coast to Lovina, avoiding the heavily populated (and heavily touristed) south around Denpasar.
